FALL 09 ANTHEM EXHIBIT -"APPLESAUCE"

“Applesauce”! The idea grew from a nostalgic feeling about autumn with it’s falling leaves, apples, and cider. As an analogy for the theme show, all apple inspired works of art will be gathered and mixed together into an award winning recipe for Anthem “Applesauce”. All art pieces entered into the show is inspired by, but not limited to apples. For example: an abstract artist might paint a canvas of reds and greens inspired by “Red Delicious” or “Granny Smith” etc.

Judge's Comments
"While the choices were difficult and I appreciate all artists that are showing, my goal as a judge was to find work that uniquely encompasses the theme of Autumn/Applesauce, and find work that was thought provoking and of high quality".

1st PLACE- Lynd's Apple Orchard in April by Susan Clem
Something about this humble and beautifully handled oil painting struck me. Even though the scene is from April it appears as though this particular landscape is in eternal autumn. The muted colors and the shift from graphic to soft details are calming, much like the season itself.

2nd PLACE- Bench Warmers by Dennis Zimmerman
Who can ignore the nostalgia that this image rings? This painting of adoring fans/grandparents/husband and wife will evoke strong feeling from any sports fan. Fall sports is one more perk to this familial season. No doubt that the medium is handled uniquely with the artists hand and emotion visible, as well as a keen eye for the human form.

3rd PLACE- October Orchard by Jan Allmon
This painting is a beautiful abstraction of landscape and autumnal color. At first a viewer might take a simple glance, but at further examination it is full of activity and it appears as though leaves are lifting into the sky and accumulating on the ground simultaneously.

Frozen Delicious by Chuck Zelms - beautiful color and well executed photograph and presentation.
Apples With Spice Tea by Nancy Vance - Great feeling of cold air warmed by spice
