Artist: Suchitra Nahata

Originally from India, I moved to the U.S. after my marriage, more than two decades ago, in July’78. Columbus was my first contact for the new American life. The people were warm and friendly and made me feel very welcome. I have always sincerely appreciated that because it helped ease my cultural adjustment and gave me a feeling of home.

Since my childhood, art has been a hobby and passion for me. The satisfaction that comes through creativity cannot be explained, it has to be only experienced. I was happy when after several years I had the opportunity to refine my earlier art training from India, through courses at Ohio State University and Columbus College of Art and Design. I joined the various Art Leagues, and since the autumn of '98, I have been exhibiting my work through the Leagues, and other juried shows in Columbus and vicinity. More than the awards received, I consider valuable the generous encouraging words and the peer support I have received from other fellow artists. It has been an educational experience and being surrounded by such a variety of talents is in itself very inspiring!

The subject matter of my art is nature. I did my undergraduate degree in Indian literature through which I learnt to deeply appreciate the alluring and all-pervasive beauty of nature. As it enthralls my heart, this admiration of nature seeks the creative outlet of my art. My artistic endeavor is a humble re-creation of that grand creation, often symbolically intertwining that portrayal with life's experiences, thus presenting nature as a means as well as an end.

I worked in the medium of Oil for many years. However, since I discovered Colored Pencil as a fine art medium, I have grown attached to the soft and atmospheric mood it lends to my subject matter…a drawing tool, which can produce the effect of a painting. The need to further explore the versatility of this medium was an incentive for me to co-found our own group, Columbus Colored Pencil Guild, in May ’01. CCPG has thrived well and has been providing opportunities for showcasing the wonders of this beautiful medium through our group shows and a venue for learning through our monthly meetings.
